Within the medical community one of the most difficult and interesting areas is the all too common condition of multiple major medical problems in people, especially older persons. This condition is called multimorbidity or comorbidity, neither of which sounds good. Morbidity refers to the presence of illness or disease. Multi-morbidity combinations were particularly problematic for clinicians and patient – especially when the medication for one problem has negative effects on the other. There is very little research done on complicated patients, physicians have little scientific evidence on which to carry out their treatment. Without guidance, doctors make their best guesses about whether a particular guideline is applicable to the patient.
