What is Yellow Nail Syndrome

If you have not heard of Yellow Nail Syndrome (YNS), well it is all right because this disorder is very rare. Yellow Nail syndrome is a combination of lymphedema or swelling of the lower extremities, bronchiectasis, recurrent pneumonia, and nails turning yellow. In most of the patients it is manifested as the disease of the lower lobes of the lungs. It might be caused by infection of the lungs or some kind of obstruction. Bronchiectasis is a disorder in which one or more of the bronchi get enlarged irreversibly. It occurs because of the damage to the muscular and elastic supporting tissues.

Yellow nail syndrome is believed to be caused by congenital abnormalities in the lymphatic system. Supplement with 800 IU of vitamin E every day for several months to help control symptoms.

you can treat yellow nail syndrome through diet. this should be treated as soon as possible to prevent a deeper infection.

Here is a list of nail problems

Yellow coloring: respiratory problem like chronic bronchitis and lymphedema (swelling of hands). The nail gets thickened and slows down the growth of new nail. The nails get detached from the nail bed and deficient in cuticle. There may chances that the respiratory system is functioning properly but the nails are yellow.
Nail pitting: people with psoriasis may have small impressions in the finger nail. It may damage your nails and cuticles. It may result in dermatitis and severe hair loss.
Nail clubbing: nail curve in the tip of your fingers. This could be due to low oxygen levels it could be sign of lung disease, bowel inflammation, cardiovascular & liver disease.
Spoon nails: nails bend outside like spoons (koilonychia) may be caused due to iron deficiency or anemia.
Terry’s nails: the nails look opaque and white band like at the tip. Aging is the common sign. This may be sign of Congestive heart failure, Diabetes, Liver disease & Malnutrition.
Beau's lines: these are indentation lines across the nails. This normally occurs when the cuticle is intervallic by illness or injury. Signs of Uncontrolled diabetes, Circulatory diseases, such as peripheral artery disease, Illness associated with a high fever, caused by pneumonia, scarlet fever, mumps or measles & Malnutrition.
Nail separated from nail bed: known as onycholysis, the nails detach from the nail bed. The conditions could be Injury or infection, Thyroid disease, Drug reactions, Reactions to nail hardeners or acrylic nails & Psoriasis

It is better to consult a dermatologist at the earliest if you find any of the signs of nail deterioration.
