Thiamin

Thiamin Description

Also known as vitamin B1 and aneurine hydrochloride, is the term for a family of molecules sharing a common structural feature responsible for its activity as a vitamin. It is one of the B vitamins. Thiamin decomposes if heated. Its chemical structure contains a pyrimidine ring and a thiazole ring. It is one of only four nutrients associated with a pandemic human deficiency disease. It is essential for neural function and carbohydrate metabolism. Thiamin deficiency results in beriberi, a disease characterized by a bewildering variety of symptoms. Common symptoms often involve the nervous system and the heart. In less severe deficiency, nonspecific signs include malaise, weight loss, irritability and confusion.
