policosanol Description

Also known as polycosanol, this substance is used as a nutritional supplement intended to lower LDL cholesterol (aka bad) and increase HDL cholesterol(aka good) and to help prevent atherosclerosis, though some studies have raised questions about the effectiveness of policosanol. This substance is also a mixture of a couple of fatty alcohols that are derived from plants such as the sugar cane, yams, and bees wax as well.
