Cascara Sagrada Description
Cascara sagrada has been used by Native Americans for a long time. Cascara sagrada has compounds called anthroquinones, that are responsible for cascara's powerful laxative effects. The Anthraquinones part of cascara segrada triggers contractions in the colon resulting in bowel movements. It is one of the most common herbal laxatives. In addition to it being a great laxative it is also believed that it improves muscle tones of the colon walls.

You can find Cascara in various forms: Capsuls, dried bark and liquid extracts. You can make the dried bark into a tea but be aware that it's very bitter. Stay away from using fresh cascara as it is known to cause bloody diarrhea and vomiting. You should age the cascara for at least a year or put it through a special heat drying machine. A normal cascara dosage is 300 mg capsule. Take cascara early in the morning to get a bowel movement in the AM. The laxative effect will take about 6 to 12 hours to occur.
