Hypothyroidism - Treatment

What treatments are available for hypothyroidism?

The main treatment for hypothyroidism is a drug known as Levothroid, which is a synthetic thryoid hormone. It is taken orally and reduces cholesterol levels and may also reverse weight gain. This drug is usually taken for life. Certain things such as soy, fiber, iron supplements, antacids and cholestyramine may reduce the efficacy of this drug.

Subclinical hypothyroidism is treated differently, so if you have it, you should discuss this with your doctor. When TSH levels are very low, the thyroid hormone therapy may actually do more harm than good.
