Absence Seizure Health Center

Absence seizure, which is also known as petit mal seizure involves a sudden lapse of conscious activity that lasts briefly. It most often occurs in children and it may look like the person is merely staring into space for a few seconds. Absence seizures appear mild when compared with other types of epileptic seizures, but that does not mean they can not be dangerous. Children with history of absence seizure should be carefully supervised while swiming or bathing due to the danger of drowning. Teens and adults may also be prohibited from driving and other dangerous activities. Absence seizures can most often be controlled with anti seizure medications. Most children outgrow their absence seizures by their teens, however a small number might eventually develop grand mal seizures.
