Achilles Tendon Rupture - Treatment

Treatment Of Achilles Tendon Rupture

There are a couple of treatment options available for those suffering with an Achilles tendon rupture.

Surgery:

Commonly used for treatment of complete rupture of the Achilles tendon.  It generally involves making an incision on the back part of the lower leg and stitching the tendon together.  Depending on the condition of the tendon, the repair may be reinforced with other tendons.  After the surgery the patient will have to spend 6 to 8 weeks in a walking boot, cast, brace or splint.

Nonsurgical Treatment:

This type of treatment involves wearing a cast or walking boot that will allow the ends of the torn tendon to reattach themselves on their own.  This is an effective method and it avoids the risks associated with surgery, such as infections.  The downside of this method is that the risk of re-rupture is higher and recovery can take much longer.  If re-rupture occurs surgical repair might be more difficult.

Rehabilitation:

Following the treatment, whether it was surgical or non surgical, the patient will go through a rehabilitation program involvin physical therapy exercises to strenghten the leg muscles and the Achilles tendon.  Majority of patients return to their former level of activity within 4 to 6 months.
