Acromegaly Health Center

Acromegaly is a relatively rare hormonal disorder which develops when the pituitary gland produces too much growth hormone, almost always as a result of a benign tumor. The excess hormone causes skin thickening, swelling, tissue growth and bone enlargement, usually in face and feet. Acromegaly usually occurs in adulthood, around middle age. If it occurs in children who are still growing it can cause a condition called gigantism which leads to an abnormal increase in height as well as excess bone growth. Children with gigantism usually have a short lifespan, around 30+ years. Since acromegaly is a relatively uncommon condition and physical changes occur very gradually, it often isn't recognized right away. When left untreated, it can lead to serious illnesses and premature death. There are available treatments that can reduce the risk of complications and significantly improve the symptoms.
