Actinic Keratosis Health Center

Actinic keratosis is a skin lesion that appears as a rough patch on face, lips, ears, back of the head, forearms, scalp or neck. It is caused by frequent or intense exposure to UV (ultraviolet) rays. Also known as solar keratosis, it enlarges slowly and most often has no signs or symptoms other than a patch or small spot on the skin. It takes years to develop, usually affecting older adults. Most doctors consider the actinic keratosis to be pre-cancerous because it can develop into skin cancer. The risk of actinic keratosis can be minimized by limiting exposure to sun and protecting the skin from UV rays.
