Acute Kidney Failure Health Center

Acute kidney failure is the sudden loss of the kidneys ability to perform their main function, which is to eliminate excess fluids and salts (electrolytes) as well as waste material from the blood. When the kidneys lose their filtering ability, dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes and waste accumulates in the body. Also known as acute kidney injury, it develops rapidly over a few hours or days, and is most common in people who are already hospitalized, particularly in critically ill people who are in need of intensive care. Acute kidney failure can be fatal and requires intensive treatment, however, if a person is in otherwise good health, they may be able to recover their normal kidney function.
