Causes Of Acute Kidney Failure

Acute kidney failure can occur if something damages the kidneys or when another condition slows blood flow to the kidneys.  Another way it can ocurr is when the waste filtered by the kidneys isnt able to leave the body through urine.

Diseases and conditions that slow blood flow to the kidneys

  • Blood loss
  • Blood pressure medications
  • Heart attack
  • Heart disease
  • Infection
  • Liver cirrhosis
  • Non-steroidal anti-inlammatory drugs
  • Severe alergic reaction
  • Severe Burns
  • Severe dehydration


Diseases and conditions which damage the kidneys

  • Blood clots in veins and arteries in and around kidneys
  • Cholesterol deposits that block blood flow to the kidneys
  • Glomerulonephritis
  • Hemolytic uremic syndrome
  • Infection
  • Lupus
  • Medications such as certain chemotherpay drugs, antibiotics and dyes used during imaging tests
