Acute Liver Failure Health Center

Acute liver failure occurs when the liver rapidly loses its ability to function. Usually liver failure develops slowly over a number of years, but acute liver failure develops in a matter of days. Also known as fulminant hepatic failure, it can cause many complications, such as excessive bleeding and increasing pressure in the brain. It is a serious complication which requires hospitalization. In some cases, acute liver failure can be reversed with treatment, while in other cases a liver transplant may be the only cure for acute liver failure.
