Risk Factors For Acute Myelogenous Leukemia

There are several factors which increase the risk of acute lymphocytic leukemia, including:

Cancer therapy
    Patients who had certain types of chemotherapy, radiation, or other treatment for other cancer, may have a slightly higher risk of developing acute lymphocytic leukemia.

Radiation exposure
    Persons exposed to very high levels of radiation such as survivors of an atomic bomb blast or a nuclear reactor accident, have an increased risk of developing the acute lymphocytic leukemia.

Genetic disorders
    Down syndrome and other genetic disorders are associated with some increased risk of acute lymphocytic leukemia.

Having a sibling with ALL
    Those with a sibling who has acute lymphocytic leukemia have a slightly higher risk of developing it as well.
