Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) Health Center

ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome) is a sudden failure of the respiratory system which occurs when fluid builds up in the tiny elastic air sacs in the lungs. In a very short time, breathing becomes difficult depraving the organs of the oxygen needed for them to function. ARDS usually occurs in people who are already critically ill, or have suffered significant injuries. ARDS is fatal in up to 40 percent of people who develop the syndrome. It is possible to survive ARDS and recover completely but it takes about a year for the patient to regain their full lung function.
