Albinism Health Center

Albinism is a group of inherited disorders which results in little or no production of the pigment melanin. The type and amount of melanin that a body produces determines the color of the skin, hair and eyes. Majority of people with albinism are sensitive to sun exposure and are at a higher risk of developing skin cancer. Melanin plays a role in the development of certain optical nerves as well, so all forms of albinism cause problems with the development as well as function of the eyes. Though albinism does not limit the intellectual development, many sufferers often feel socially isolated and many experience discrimination. There is no cure for albinism but sufferers can take steps to improve their vision and avoid too much exposure to sun.
