Amyloidosis is a disease which occurs due to build up of substances called amyloid proteins in the organs. Amyloid is an abnormal protein which is usually produced by cells in bone marrow which can be deposited in any tissue or organ. Amyloidosis can affect different organs in different people, so there are many different types of amyloid. It frequently affects the heart, kidneys, liver, nervous system, spleen and gastrointestinal tract. It is a rare disease whose causes are often unknown. There are treatments that can help manage the symptoms and limit the production of amyloid protein.
