Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Health Center

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a serious neurological disease which causes muscle weakness, disability and eventually death. Throughout the world, ALS occurs in about 1 to 3 people per 100,000. In about 5-10% of these cases the disease occurs in inherited form, however for the vast majority of cases the doctors are not sure why it occurs in some people and not the others. ALS usually begins with muscle twitching and weakness in an arm or leg, or with slurring of speech. Eventually it affects the ability to control the muscles needed for movement, speaking, eating and breathing.
