Anal Fissure Health Center

An anal fissure is a small tear in the skin which lines the anus. It may occur when a hard or large stool is passed during a bowel movement. Anal fissure typically causes pain and bleeding with bowel movements. Most often anal fissures affect people in middle age but are also the most common cause of rectal bleeding in infants. Most anal fissures heal within a few weeks with treatment for constipation but in some cases they can become chronic in which case medical treatment or surgery can usually relieve the discomfort.
