Aortic Valve Regurgitation Health Center

Aortic valve regurgitation is a condition which occurs when the heart's aortic valve does not close tightly. With this condition, the aortic valve allows some of the blood which was just pumped out of the hearts main pumping chamber to leak back into it. This leakage may prevent the heart from efficiently pumping blood out to the rest of the body and as a result the person can feel fatigued and short of breath. Aortic valve regurgitation can develop either suddenly or over decades, and has a variety of causes ranging from congenital heart defects to complications from infectious diseases. If the aortic valve regurgitation becomes severe, it usually requires surgery to repair or replace the aortic valve.
