Arteriosclerosis / Atherosclerosis Health Center

Over time, too much pressure in the arteries can make the arterial walls thick and stiff, leading to restricted blood flow to organs and tissues. This process is called arteriosclerosis, meaning hardening of the arteries. Atherosclerosis is a specific type of arteriosclerosis, however the terms are often used interchangeably. The buildup of fats in and on the artery walls, which can restrict blood flow is called Atherosclerosis. These buildups can sometimes burst, causing a blood clot. Though atherosclerosis is often thought of as a heart problem, it can affect any artery in the body. Atherosclerosis is a preventable and treatable condition.
