Ataxia Health Center

Ataxia is the lack of muscle coordination during voluntary movements such as walking or picking up objects. A symptom of an underlying condition, ataxia can affect movements, speech, eye movements and the ability to swallow. Persistent ataxia is most often result from damage to the cerebellum, the part of the brain which controls muscle coordination. A number of conditions can cause ataxia, including alcohol abuse, stroke, tumor, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. It is possible to inherit a defective gene which may cause one of many ataxia variants as well.
