Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) Health Center

Atrial septal defect is a whole in the wall between the two upper chambers of the heart. This condition is present from birth, meaning it is congenital. The smaller atrial septal defects can close on their own during infancy or early childhood. Larger and long standing atrial septal defects can damage the heart and lungs. An adult who has an undetected atrial septal defect for decades might have a shortened life span from heart failure or high blood pressure in the lungs. In most cases, surgery is necessary to repair the atrial septal defects to prevent complications.
