Atrioventricular Canal Defect Health Center

Atrioventricular canal defect is a combination of several congenital abnormalities (present at birth). Sometimes called endocardial cushion defect, or atrioventricular septal defect, this occurs when there is a hole between the hearts chambers and problems with the valves which regulate blood flow in the heart. Atrioventricular canal defect allows extra blood to circulate to the lungs, which creates problems that overwork the heart and cause it to enlarge.
