Bladder Control - Causes

There are many different causes for bladder control problems, including:

-urinary tract infections

-medications can cause bladder control problems as a side effect, such as antidepressants, sedatives and sleeping pills

-tightly packed stool in the lower intestine

-weak muscles in and around the bladder

-overactive bladder

-irritated bladder

-blocked urethra, especially due to an oversized prostate

-smoking can irritate the bladder resulting in incontinence

-excess weight can reduce bladder muscle strength and put pressure on the bladder

-frequent constipation can weaken the bladder muscles

-diabetes

-spinal cord injuries

-disabilities may make it difficult to reach the washroom in time

-neurologic disorders such as MS, stroke and Parkinsons may cause incontinence.

-surgery or radiation therapy in the pelvic area

-pregnancy: incontinence affects up to one half of pregnant women and up to 8% of postpartume women

-menopause

-hysterectomy

-oversized prostate

-prostate surgery

-bladder diseases

-stress incontinence caused by laughter, coughing, or anything that pressures the muscles around the bladder

-urge incontinence caused by contractions in the bladder
