Prevention Of Blastocystis Hominis Infection

When traveling to high-risk countries, there are several things that can be done to prevent infection with B.hominis.

Watch what you eat
    The general rule is, If it can't be boiled, cooked, or peeled, avoid eating it.  Also:

  • Do not buy food from street vendors
  • Avoid unpasteurized milk and dairy products, including ice-cream
  • Avoid raw or undercooked meat, fish or shellfish
  • Avoid moist food at room temperatures, such as sauces or buffet offerings
  • Eat well cooked foods served hot
  • Eat fruit and vegetables such as bananas, oranges etc.

Do not drink the water

  • Avoid unsterilized water, from tap, well or stream.
  • Avoid ice cubes or fruit juices made with tap water
  • Do not eat sliced fruit washed in contaminated water
  • Do not swim in contaminated water
  • Keep mouth closed while showering
  • Use bottled water to brush teeth
  • Use bottled water or boiled water to mix baby formula
