Brucellosis - Risk Factors

Risk Factors For Brucellosis

Brucellosis is rare in the US, with less than 200 cases reported each year, and occur mainly in Texas and California.  Other parts of the world have much higher rates of infection, such as Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, The Near East and North Africa, South and Central America, Mexico, parts of Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

In addition to location, other factors may increase the risk of brucellosis, such as:

  • Raw dairy foods
  • Animal-related occupation
  • Hunting
  • Laboratory work
