Brucellosis - Treatment

Treatment For Brucellosis

The treatment goal for brucellosis is to relieve symptoms, prevent a relapse of the disease and avoid the complications.  Medications will need to be used for six weeks and the symptoms may not go away completely for several months.

Antibiotics
A standard treatment for brucellosis is a combination of two or three antibiotic medications, most often doxycycline in combination with streptomycin, rifampin or gentamicin.  These drugs are taken for about six weeks, sometimes longer.  If the brucellosis has affected the central nervous system, the antibiotics will be needed for as long as 3 months.
