Bunions Health Center

A bunion is an abnormal, bony bump which forms on the joint at the base of the big toe. The big toe joint becomes enlarged, forcing the toe to crowd against the other toes which puts pressure on the big toe joint, pushing it outward beyond the normal profile of the foot, and resulting in pain. Bunions can occur for a variety of reasons, but the most common cause is wearing shoes which are too tight. Bunions can also develop as a result of an inherited structural defect, stress on the foot or a medical condition such as arthritis.
