Carotid Artery Disease Health Center

Carotid artery disease occurs when fatty deposits (plaques) clog the carotid artery. The carotid arteries are a pair of blood vessels which deliver blood to the brain and head. The buildup of plaques in these arteries blocks the blood supply to the brain and increases the risk of stroke. Carotid artery disease develops slowly and many times it goes unnoticed. In some cases a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) is the first outward symptom of the condition.
