Cellulitis - Complications

Complications From Cellulitis

The reddened skin or rash can signal a deeper more serious infection of the inner layers of the skin.  When below the skin, the bacteria can spread rapidly, entering the lymph nodes and the bloodstream, spreading throughout the body.  Recurrent episodes of cellulitis can actually damage the lymphatic drainage system due to the chronic swelling of the affected extremity.  In very rare cases, the infection may spread to the deeper layer of tissue called the fascial lining.  Flesh eating strep, also called necrotizing fasciitis is an example of a deep layer infection.
