Chiari Malformation - Complications

Complications From Chiari Malformation

For some people, Chiari malformation can become a progressive disorder which can lead to serious complications, while for others, there could be no associated symptoms and no intervention is necessary.  The complications associated with this condition include:

Hydrocephalus - The accumulation of excess fluid in the brain can require a placement of a flexible tube (shunt) to divert and drain the cerebrospinal fluid into another area of the body.

Paralysis - This can occur due to the crowding and pressure on the spinal cord.  Paralysis tends to be permanent, even after surgical treatment.

Syringomyelia - In some cases, people with Chiari malformation also develop a condition called syringomyelia, in which a cavity or cyst forms within the spinal column.  Though the mechanism connecting the Chiari malformation with syringomyelia is unclear, it could be associated with injury or displacement of nerve fibers in the spinal cord.  If the cavity forms it is often filled with fluid and can further imapir the function of the spinal cord.

Death - If a child is born with Chiari malformation type IV, death is very common, usually early in infancy.
