Childhood Disintegrative Disorder - Causes

Causes Of Childhood Disintegrative Disorder

The exact cause of childhood disintegrative disorder is not known.  There is likely a genetic basis for autism spectrum disorders.  A theory exists that an abnormal gene is switched on in the early stages of development, before birth, and that this gene affects other genes which coordinate the brain development of a child.  Exposure to environmental factors such as toxin or infection may be contributing to these effects.  It may also be possible that an autoimmune response could play a role in the development of childhood disintegrative disorder.  In an autoimmune response, the body's immune system sees normal body components as foreign and attacks them.

Childhood disintegrative disorder often occurs with other conditions such as:

Tuberous sclerosis - in this condition, a noncancerous (benign) tumors grow in the brain
Lipid storage disease - a rare group of inherited metabolic disorders where a toxic buildup of excess fats (lipids) occurs in the brain and nervous system
Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis - a chronic infection of the brain caused by a form of the measles virus which results in brain inflammation and the death of nerve cells.

It is still unclear if these conditions play a part in triggering childhood disintegrative disorder or if they share genetic or environmental risk factors.
