Childhood Disintegrative Disorder - Treatment

Treatment For Childhood Disintegrative Disorder

There is no cure for childhood disintegrative disorder, and the treatment for the disorder is basically the same as the treatment used for autism.  The treatment options may include:

Medications
There are no medications that are made specifically for treating childhood disintegrative disorder, however severe behavior problems like aggression, and repetitive movements could sometimes be controlled by medications for anxiety or depression, or anti-psychotic medications.  Anti-convulsant drugs can be used to control epileptic seizures.

Behavior therapy

A therapy technique which may be used by psychologists, speech therapists, physical therapists and occupational therapists, as well as parents, teachers and caregivers.  These therapy programs can be designed to help the child learn or relearn language, social and self-care skills.  The programs use a system of rewards to reinforce desirable behaviors, and discourage problematic behavior.

The outcome for the children with childhood disintegrative disorder is generally worse than for children with autism.  The loss of language, cognitive, social and self-care skills tends to be severe and unlikely to improve.  In the majority of cases, children with the disorder need lifelong support with activities of daily living and could eventually need residential care in a group home or long-term care facility.
