Cholecystitis Health Center

Cholecystitis is an inflammation of the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small pear shaped organ on the right side of the abdomen, just beneath the liver. It holds a digestive fluid called bile which is released into the small intestine. In a lot of cases, cholecystitis is caused by gallstones which block the tube leading out of the gallbladder, resulting in a buildup of bile which can cause inflammation. Other causes of cholecystitis include infection, injury and tumors.
