Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome - Treatment

Treatment For Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome

There are conservative and surgical options for treating chronic exertional compartment syndrome, but conservative measures have proven much less effective.

Conservative options
Initially, pain medications, stretching or strengthening regiments, orthotics, massage, a break from exercise, or use of different bio-mechanical techniques, such as changing the way a person lands when they jog may be recommended.  These conservative options though usually do not provide lasting benefit for true chronic exertional compartment syndrome.

Surgical options
Surgery is the main treatment of chronic exertional compartment syndrome, and also the most effective.  Surgery involves operating on the fascia.  The methods include either cutting open the fascia of each affected compartment (fasciotomy) or removing part of the fascia (fascietomy).  Both of the methods result in decompression, meaning the compartment is no longer trapped by the unyielding fascia, allowing it room to expand when pressure increases.

While surgery is very effective for most people, it does carry risk.  Complications of the surgery could include infection, permanent nerve damage, numbness and scarring.  Also, because the muscles are no longer encased by fascia, they may bulge out during exercise.
