Churg-Strauss Syndrome - Complications

Complications From Churg-Strauss Syndrome

Churg-Strauss can affect a variety of organs, including lungs, skin, gastrointestinal system, kidneys, muscles, joints and heart.  Without treatment the disease can be fatal.  Complications depend on which organs were involved, and can include:

Peripheral nerve damage - These nerves extend throughout the body, connecting organs, glands, muscles and skin with the brain and spinal cord. Churg-Strauss syndrome can damage peripheral nerves, especially those in the hands and feet, leading to numbness, burning and loss of function, which can be permanent.

Skin scarring - Inflammation can cause sores to develop on the skin, which can leave scars.

Heart disease - Heart related complications of Churg-Strauss syndrome include inflammation of the membrane surrounding the heart, inflammation of the muscular layer of the heart wall, heart attack and heart failure.

Kidney damage - Though it is relatively rare, if Churg-Strauss syndrome affects the kidneys, a disease called glomerulonephritis may develop.  It is a kidney disease which hampers the kidneys' filtering ability, thus leading to buildup of waste products in the blood stream.  Glomerulonephritis is rare, but it can be fatal if it occurs.
