Coma Health Center

Coma is a state of prolonged unconsciousness which can be caused by a variety of problems, such as head injury, stroke, brain tumor, drug or alcohol intoxication, or even an underlying illness like diabetes or an infection. Coma is a medical emergency, requiring swift action in order to preserve life and brain function. A battery of tests is usually ordered, such as blood tests and a brain CT scan, in order to determine the cause of coma so that proper treatment can begin. Comas usually do not last longer than several weeks. People who are unconscious for longer than that can transition to a persistent vegetative state. Depending on the cause of coma, people who are in persistent vegetative state for more than 3 years are very unlikely to awaken.
