Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a rare chronic condition which usually affects an arm or a leg. In some rare cases of complex regional pain syndrome, CRPS can affect other parts of the body. Complex regional pain syndrome is characterized by intense burning or aching pain. Swelling, skin discoloration, altered temperature, abnormal sweating and hypersensitivity may be experienced in the affected area. The cause of CRPS is not fully understood, although it often follows an illness or an injury.
