Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia Health Center

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia is a family of genetic conditions which affect the adrenal glands. It can interfere with normal growth and development in children, including normal development of genitals, and it affects both genders. In children and adults with congenital adrenal hyperplasia, the adrenal glands generally do not produce enough of the hormone cortisol. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia can also result in the adrenals making abnormal levels of two other classes of hormones, mineralocorticoids (for eg. aldosterone) and androgens (for eg. testosterone). Though congenital adrenal hyperplasia can be life-threatening, most people who have it can lead normal lives with proper treatment.
