Coronary Artery Disease Health Center

Coronary artery disease develops when the coronary arteries, the major blood vessels which supply the heart with blood, oxygen and nutrients, become damaged or diseased. Cholesterol-containing deposits (plaques) on the arteries are usually the main suspects for coronary artery disease. Plaques buildup narrows the coronary arteries, causing the heart to receive less blood. Eventually, diminished blood flow can cause chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, and other coronary artery disease symptoms. A complete blockage can cause a heart attack.
