Cushing's Syndrome Health Center

Cushing's syndrome occurs when the body is exposed to high levels of hormone cortisol for a long time. The most common cause is the use of oral corticosteroid medication, but Cushing's can occur also when the body makes too much cortisol. Too much cortisol can produce some of the characterizing symptoms of Cushing's syndrome, a fatty hump between the shoulders, a rounded face, and pink or purple stretchmarks on the skin. Cushing's syndrome, also called hypercortisolism, can also result in high blood pressure, bone loss, and sometimes diabetes.
