Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Health Center

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common and widespread virus which can infect just about anyone. Most people with CMV do not even know they are infected as it rarely causes symptoms. The greatest concern is for pregnant women and people with a weak immune system. Once a person has been infected, the virus stays in their body for life. CMV spreads through bodily fluids like blood, saliva, urine, semen and breast milk. People with weak immune systems have a higher risk of becoming ill from cytomegalovirus. In women who are pregnant and have never been exposed to CMV, developing an active infection can cause disabilities for their unborn baby.
