Dehydration Health Center

Dehydration occurs when a person loses more fluid than they take in, and the body doesn't have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions. If the person does not replenish the lost fluids, they may suffer serious consequences. Common causes of dehydration include intense diarrhea, vomiting, fever or excessive sweating. Inadequate intake of water during hot weather or exercise can also cause dehydration. While anyone can become dehydrated, young children, older adults and people with chronic illnesses are at highest risk.
