The term "diabetes mellitus" refers to a group of disease which affects how the body uses blood glucose, also called blood sugar. Glucose is vital for the health as it is the main source of energy for the cells which make up the muscles and tissues. It is the body's main source of fuel. People who have diabetes, regardless of the type, have too much glucose in their blood, though the reasons may differ. Too much glucose in the blood can lead to serious health problems.
