Diabetic Ketoacidosis Health Center

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a serious complications of diabetes which occurs when the body produces very high levels of blood acids called ketones. Diabetic ketoacidosis develops when a person has too little insulin in their body. Insulin normally plays a key role in helping sugar (glucose), which is a major source of energy for muscles and other tissues, enter the cells. When there is not enough insulin, the body begins to break down fat as an alternate fuel. This process in turn, produces toxic acids in the bloodstream called ketones, eventually resulting in diabetic ketoacidosis if left untreated.
