Diphtheria Health Center

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection which usually affects mucous membranes of the nose and throat. Diphtheria generally causes a sore throat, fever, swollen glands and weakness. The hallmark symptom, however, is a thick, gray covering in the back of the throat which can make breathing difficult. Diphtheria can also affect the skin. In the past, diphtheria was a leading cause of death among children, but today it is rare in the USA and other developed countries thanks to widespread vaccination against the disease.
