Hemorrhoids Causes

What causes hemorrhoids?

It is not known for certain what exactly causes hemorrhoids. Many believe that too little fiber, and resulting constipation are the main culprits. This may explain why hemorrhoids are more common in the West, where people tend to get less fiber in their diets.

Spending a long time sitting on the toilet due to constipation, and straining during a bowel movement are likely contributing factors. This is due to too much pressure in the hemorrhoid veins which results in swelling. Liver disease also causes swelling of the hemorrhoid veins resulting in hemorrhoids.

It is also known that pregnant women, older people and people who suffer from diarrhea are more likely to get hemorrhoids. Some people may also be genetically predisposed to the condition. If your family members have had hemorrhoids, you are at a higher risk to get them.
