Causes Hives

Hives is most commonly caused by some type of allergic reaction, here are some common hives allergic reactions:

Medication alergic reactions:

  • Antibiotics
  • Codeine
  • Penicilin
  • Sulfa
  • Anticonvulsant drugs
  • Phenobarbital
  • Aspirin
  • Morphine
  • Polymyxin
  • Dextran
  • Curare
  • Quinine
  • Diuretics

Food alergic reactions:

  • Shellfish
  • Nuts
  • Tomatoes
  • Soy
  • Chocolate
  • Pork
  • Eggs
  • Yeast
  • Citrus fruites
  • Strawberries

Other alergic reactions:

  • Pollen
  • Cat dander
  • Insect Bites such as bee and wasp stings

 

Hives has also been linked to the following:

  • Emotinal Stress
  • Bacterial (viral) fungal infetions
  • Hepatitis B
  • Parasitic worms
  • Food Additives
  • Plants
  • Cold temperatures
  • Heat
  • Sweating
  • Dermatographism (tight fitting clothes)

 

As you can see there are many things that could cause Hives to appear.  About 70% of all causes of Hives cannot be determined.  The list above covers many of the most common causes but does not list all of them.  If you have Hives you should also consider not eating or taking anything in the list above.

For those who's source of Hives can be determined, the cause is commonly an ingestion or inhalation of a substance.  Some drugs can cause Hives even if the patient has been taking them for years.
