How is chronic kidney disease treated?

Treating chronic kidney disease involves preventing or reducing further damage to the kidneys. Often another condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure is causing it in the first place, so it is important to identify the causative condition and get it under control as much as possible. Other causes of kidney disease, such as blockages and the use of certain medications may be addressed by a doctor.

There are various other ways to control your kidney disease. Making sure your diet has appropriate amounts of sodium, protein and fluids can help. If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, daily exercise can help. Avoiding certain medications that can damage the kidneys, such as Advil can slow kidney disease. Making sure you stay well hydrated is also very important. It's also important to avoid smoking, drinking alcohol, or using illegal drugs.
